Nietzsche Knew: Becoming Yourself Takes Novelty
Nobody in the study was told to stop feeling upset. That wasn’t the intervention. Enhancing resilience, flexibility, and well-being through cognitive-emotional training: behavioral and neural evidence, published August 18, 2026 in Scientific Reports by University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign psychologists Sanda Dolcos and Florin Dolcos with Kelly Hohl of the Phoenix VA Healthcare Center, ran college students through five weeks of twice-weekly training in two separate emotion-regulation strategies, then scanned their brains. Distress went down. Prefrontal connectivity went up. Reactivity in the brain’s negative-emotion circuits went down. None of it required participants to suppress anything. Chrysippus, the third head of the Stoa and the man who did more than anyone to systematize what Stoicism actually claims about emotion, described the same two-step mechanism in the third century BCE, and gave it a name modern psychology basically reinvented: the gap between an involuntary “first movement” and the assent that turns it into something you’re stuck feeling.

The Quick Version
A 2026 UIUC study trained college students for five weeks in two distinct ways of handling distressing material: look at the neutral parts of the scene, or reinterpret the upsetting parts more generously. Both worked, and they showed up as different, measurable changes in brain connectivity. Chrysippus described this exact split twenty-three centuries earlier — an involuntary flinch that arrives whether you like it or not, and a separate, controllable act of agreeing with the story that flinch is telling you. The study didn’t discover Stoicism. It found the machinery underneath a distinction Chrysippus already had a name for.
Most emotion-regulation research tests one strategy at a time, which tells you that something works without telling you how two different approaches to the same problem might work differently. Dolcos and Hohl built their intervention specifically to separate the mechanisms.
Over five weeks, twice a week, participants trained in two distinct strategies. The first was attentional deployment: shown a distressing photo (a car accident, say) or asked to recall a difficult personal memory, they practiced deliberately shifting focus onto the neutral, peripheral details — the trees at the edge of the frame, the intact vehicle, the sky — rather than the upsetting focal content. The second was cognitive reappraisal: taking that same distressing material, photo or memory, and actively constructing a more positive interpretation of it. Not denial. A different, defensible reading of the same facts.
The researchers measured what happened three ways. Self-report, on mood, anxiety, worry, and trauma-adjacent symptoms. Eye-tracking, to confirm participants were actually doing what the training asked (spending less time fixated on the emotionally loaded regions of an image). And resting-state fMRI, capturing how brain regions were talking to each other when the person wasn’t doing anything in particular.
All three lined up. Trained participants reported measurably less distress when viewing negative images and when recalling hard personal events, compared to controls. Their gaze patterns shifted away from emotionally charged content. And their brain scans showed increased functional connectivity in the prefrontal cortex — the region doing top-down, goal-directed regulation — alongside reduced sensitivity in the regions that generate the negative-emotion response in the first place. As Kelly Hohl put it, in UIUC’s own writeup of the findings, “bottom-up processing helps us detect and respond to important information in our environment, whereas top-down processing allows us to intentionally guide our attention and responses based on our goals.” The training didn’t blunt the bottom-up system. It strengthened the top-down one enough to hold its own against it.
Sanda Dolcos’s framing of what the results actually mean is worth sitting with: “resilience is about flexibility. The key to resilience is not avoiding negative emotions or just simply trying to feel positive all the time; it’s more about developing the flexibility to respond to emotions in ways that fit the situation.” Two tools, not one. Which is exactly where this study stops looking like a psychology paper and starts looking like an argument Chrysippus already made.
Chrysippus never ran a five-week intervention. What he had was a rival theory to demolish and roughly seven hundred books (mostly lost, known now through fragments preserved in Seneca, Cicero, Diogenes Laertius, and Gellius) to do it in.
The theory he was arguing against, associated with the earlier Stoic Zeno’s looser formulations and more explicitly with later critics of Stoicism, treated emotion as something closer to raw force: a surge that simply happens to you, proportional to the situation, with no real decision point inside it. Chrysippus rejected the idea that emotion is a single, undivided event. He divided it in two.
The first stage is what later Stoics, translating his term into Latin, called propatheia — Seneca’s “first movement” (primus motus). This is the involuntary jolt: your chest tightening at bad news, tears starting before you’ve decided anything, the flinch when a car swerves toward you. Chrysippus reportedly described it as a “bite” — a sharp, physical contraction that arrives with the impression itself and that even the wisest person alive still experiences. Nobody is exempt from the first movement. It isn’t a moral failure. It’s closer to a reflex.
The second stage is where Chrysippus’s whole ethics actually lives: pathos, full passion, which only occurs if the mind gives synkatathesis — assent — to the evaluative judgment folded inside that first impression. An impression isn’t neutral data. It arrives already carrying a claim: this is terrible, this is a catastrophe, this person has wronged me. The first movement doesn’t wait for you to check whether that claim is true. But whether you go on to believe it, to organize your subsequent thinking and behavior around it as if it were established fact, is a separate act, and Chrysippus insisted it’s the one act in the whole sequence that’s actually up to you. As Donald Robertson lays out in his account of Chrysippus’s model of anger, assent in this technical sense isn’t mild agreement. It’s the point where an impression stops being a candidate description of reality and starts functioning as reality for you. The Stanford Encyclopedia’s entry on Seneca makes the same distinction from the Roman end of the tradition: the proto-emotion is involuntary, but full passion requires assent, and assent is where responsibility enters the picture.
This site has covered Epictetus’s version of the same architecture — prohairesis, the faculty of choice that no external force can reach. Chrysippus is where that idea gets its psychological mechanics. Epictetus tells you that you’re free to choose your response. Chrysippus tells you exactly where, inside the sequence of an emotional event, that choice actually sits: not before the first movement (you don’t get a vote there) but at the assent that follows it.
Read against Chrysippus, these aren’t two versions of the same move. They intervene at two different points in his sequence. Attentional deployment works upstream, shrinking how vivid and complete the initial impression gets to become in the first place — less material available to generate a first movement worth assenting to. Cognitive reappraisal works downstream, at the assent point itself: the full impression forms, but the mind declines to ratify the catastrophic reading of it and substitutes another one. One strategy limits the input. The other overrules the verdict. Chrysippus, as far as the surviving fragments show, never separated these two levers this explicitly. The brain-connectivity data now shows they’re doing distinguishable work.
Two earlier posts here have made the Stoicism-and-neuroscience connection, and it’s worth being precise about how this study is different rather than pretending it’s the first time the subject’s come up.
The Southampton research covered previously tracked an eight-week intervention using three classical Stoic exercises — negative visualization, cognitive distancing, and evening journaling — against anxiety and depression scores. It’s good evidence that Stoic-style practice produces clinical-grade results. But it tested Stoic exercises as a bundle, against outcome measures, without imaging.
The Frontiers premeditatio malorum research covered previously went to the brain, but examined a single practice — imagining feared outcomes in advance — and its relationship to frontal-limbic activation broadly.
Neither study isolated two distinct, competing regulation strategies with connectivity-level evidence for how each one works differently. Neither cited Chrysippus, propatheia, or the specific mechanics of assent at all — both leaned on the more familiar Epictetus-and-CBT connection instead. The UIUC study is the first piece of research on this site that gives Chrysippus’s two-stage model something close to a one-to-one mechanistic match, rather than a general family resemblance to “Stoicism helps with anxiety.”
None of this makes Chrysippus a forgotten neuroscientist, and it’s worth being straightforward about the gaps.
The UIUC sample is college students, trained over five weeks, in a controlled setting, on curated images and self-selected memories. That’s a specific population dealing with a specific intensity of distress. It says little about how these strategies perform against trauma, grief, or the kind of chronic, high-intensity distress where attentional redirection or reappraisal might not be enough on their own. This site’s stoic grief piece makes a related point about the limits of cognitive reframing when the loss itself, not the interpretation of it, is the problem.
There’s also a real risk of over-claiming the philosophical match. Chrysippus’s theory is metaphysically ambitious — it’s bound up in Stoic claims about the rational structure of the cosmos and what a fully wise person (the sage) would experience, which is a much bigger claim than “two training techniques changed resting-state connectivity in undergraduates.” A five-week protocol measuring gaze patterns and functional MRI doesn’t verify Stoic physics. It verifies that something resembling Chrysippus’s distinction between an initial impression and a governable response to it shows up as a real, trainable split in how the brain processes distress. That’s a meaningful convergence. It isn’t proof of the whole system.
And reappraisal has its own well-documented failure mode: used to avoid taking real action on a genuinely bad situation, “reframing” curdles into denial. Neither Dolcos and Hohl nor Chrysippus wrote this as a five-minute exercise, but the shared shape of what they found points somewhere usable.
Dolcos and Hohl weren’t testing Stoicism. They were testing whether two specific, trainable strategies change how the brain processes distress, and they found that both do, differently, in ways you can see on a scan. Chrysippus wasn’t running an fMRI. He was building a psychological theory precise enough to survive its own author’s books being lost for two thousand years, carried forward in fragments by writers who thought the distinction mattered too much to let go. A jolt that isn’t your fault, and a verdict on that jolt that is. Twenty-three centuries apart, that’s the same split, described in two very different vocabularies, landing on the same place.
